Charlie Dewhirst, Member of Parliament for Bridlington and The Wolds, visited postal workers at Driffield Delivery Office on Friday to find out more about what it takes to deliver letters and parcels in the peak Christmas period, and to thank them for their efforts.
Christmas is Royal Mail’s busiest period, with around double the normal volume of letters and parcels processed. Charlie spoke to Customer Operations Manager Tom Burdett about the Royal Mail’s strategy to keep it easy for people to send and receive parcels over the festive periods.
Charlie met local postal workers and learned how Royal Mail prepares all year to deliver Christmas. Across Britain, the business has recruited 16,000 temporary workers to help its 85,000 posties sort the additional mail and increasing number of parcels expected over the festive period. Almost 4,000 new vans, trucks and trailers are being added to the fleet in time for Christmas.
Driffield Delivery Office has hired three new members of staff and six extra vans for the Christmas period to meet increased demand for deliveries in the local area.
Charlie Dewhirst MP said:
“It was brilliant to get to go behind the scenes and see how much effort our local postal workers put in to deliver our cards and presents at this time of year. It wouldn’t be possible without their hard work, and I have a newfound appreciation for their work having seen the operation from the inside.”
Tom Burdett, Customer Operations Manager for Driffield, said:
“It was great to have Charlie visit our Delivery Office, and to show him how we are gearing up for our peak period. We are pulling out all the stops to deliver Christmas for our customers.”
